UTStarcom - It was a very interesting call. They basically were dissing CDMA450 saying it was only in use in Romania and Russia and the handsets were expensive. They went on to say that the Lehman report indicating that CDMA 450 was a dramatically lower cost solution was wrong because their solution was on the order of $170 per subscriber for handsets and infrastrure whereas the CDMA450 phones were almost that much. They said CDMA450 phones would have to drop to the $45-50 level to be competitive.
They also pointed out, after this attempt to trash CDMA450 that they weren't concerned because CDMA450 was a very good RURAL solution whereas all of the UTStarcom subscribers were in dense URBAN areas.
Finally, they did acknowledge that Lucent and Huawei were in discussions for trials with China Telecom. They seemed to dismiss these trials though by saying that even if Telecom gave them a trial, for the reasons above, they wouldn't necessarily go with them. They also pointed out that the 450 band is used by many applications currently including military and other uses and it would have to be cleared (which would take time) if China Telecom were to use it.

Where there is smoke there is fire. Anybody see the Lehman report on UTStarcom?
Interestingly they did acknowledge
