BTW: The new and exciting stuff in software is in open source aka Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP, PERL etc...
Proprietary stuff is slowly losing steam! In fact, Linux is one threat that MSFT has no defenses against!

Actually there is going to be (actually already IS) 2 major players: MSFT, and IBM. (ORCL will soon be history as a major software player and will simply become "just another" software player)...

Then there are secondary guys that do not provide the core technology but try to leverage what MSFT and/or IBM will offer: ORCL, BEA, PSFT, SEBl and SAP.
