Interesting article. Thanks for posting it.

I think it so absurd to hear people talk about God in familiar human terms. If the conductor prayed seconds before the train crash, let's examine the evidence to see whether we can find confirmation that praying is effective.

"Ridiculous" would be much to weak a word to describe such an idea.

We have to begin with the realization that for a God to have created a universe of mortals is a priori infinitely improbable and monumentally beyond the ken of human understanding. For God to permit suffering is off the known scale of logical self-contradiction. Everything we could infer with our mortal brains about God's nature leads to dead-ends of making no sense whatsoever by human standards.

Can we know God? Yes, in the same way we know a square circle, infinity, or eternity. Our consciousness allows for us to understand the concept without the slightest understanding of its nature or how it could be.

I believe in God because I can accept the limits to my cognitive powers as a mortal. I would pray if I faced certain death and had the moment to do so.
