Well, my father grew up in stark poverty with his 13 brothers and sisters and came out of it as a man of great integrity.

The only benefit they had was that they lived on a small farm and were able to raise much of the food they ate.

But they didn't receive welfare or umemployment checks, food stamps, WICC, and/or medicare. Nor did they receive Social Security.

And when we look at many poor folks who grew up in the south, black and white, we find most of them to be people who understand the value of a dollar and how hard it is to earn it.

Poverty can be a "consumer of souls", but there is something else inherent in those people's attitudes, imo, which causes them to resort to criminal activities. And some of it has to do with this belief that the world (government) owes them something, or that they are entitled to have financial security.

There are PLENTY of agencies, institutions and charities, available to assist those who want only a hand up, rather than a hand out. But it requires some self-respect, which NO AMOUNT of money is going to create.

And if you have to look for an example, take a look at the "slave reparations" BS that certain black leaders pander out to their constituencies. They are "owed" something, despite their never having suffered personally the yoke of slavery. They've been brain-washed to believe that they have been "oppressed" and prevented from succeeding, when in fact, many have not been willing to get the chip off their shoulder and recognize that nearly everyone else in this world has had to struggle to survive and succeed (as represented by my father).

And it ignores the plight of such groups as the Irish, Chinese, Poles, Slavs (from which the term "slave" derives) who spent their time working hard instead of complaining and trying to milk the system.

That's why I praised the day that "workfare" replaced welfare system.

It was WELFARE (without requirement of performing work or training) that is spiritually destructive.

Just my opinion.
