Did you see the price? : The Compaq D315 costs $600 to $700 each, depending on the Athlon XP chip used, HP said. But there will be initial $100 rebates offered on the machines. The PCs are available now.

With the rebate, that would make the XP 2000+ $500 and the XP 2200+ $600.

I couldn't confirm the prices or configuration at HP's website, where the D315 doesn't exist yet.

But looking at the D300 models, $549 only gets you a 1.4 GHz Celeron and $599 only gets you a 1.7 GHz P4, both of these models with only 20G HD, 128MB SDRAM and i815e graphics or NVidia Vanta16 graphics. Even at $679, you only get to 1.8 GHz.

DELL's nearest competition is a P4 1.8A with 128M at $499.

Milo, I really liked the line from your linked article "There are absolutely some corporate customers who appreciate the choice, and some of the more technically astute guys really appreciate the AMD solution".

It's a start, but it is still a base rate machine.

The D315 is now linked on the Compaq Business home page with this description:
Compaq D315
The D315 offers desktop solutions with nVidia and AMD technologies delivering maximum price/performance for businesses.

There's no mention there of the $100 intro discount. To get to the prices mentioned in the Forbes article, you'd have to reduce to 20G HD and only 128M DDR memory. Thankfully, it does include NVidia chipset graphics and 3 year warranty, better than the cheap Intel solutions. Also, the XP2200+ is only $40 more, not $100 more as implied in the article.

It's like a small hole in a dam. Once water starts to trickle out, there's not holding it back- and the eventual crack of the entire dam itself.

And of course, under relentless and strong pressure of a large head of water (high performing, trouble free inexpensive chips from AMD), no dam can hold out for ever. Nature will always find a way.

And with the coming of the hammer series, it seems that the head of water is about to overflow the dam- forget about a need to crack it!

No wonder the Intelabees are getting shriller by the day. They must have advance info about some of this. Also note that there have been no jokes about hammer being a "foil" for quite a while now.

They must have seen the real performance first hand.

I think the biggest slap on the INTC face is the following statement by the largest INTC customer:

"...and some of the more technically astute guys really appreciate the AMD solution"

!!

What an assertion that INTC's high reving P4 is not the most advanced solution and that the technically astute customer can see through all the "blue men" hype and realize that the men are really blue from holding their breadth, less they speak the truth about how for the first time in 25 years of uP history a next generation architecture is both a lower IPC as well as lower absolute performance (for the introductory members of the family) than the last generation.

Re: AMD scores victory with HP business personal computer

Great news!

It looks for real, with XP PRO the default OS, and support for all of Compaq's corporate manageability functionality, asset tracking, network boot, etc.

Hmmm... this is a day which I for the last few months wasn't sure I'd ever see...

Promising news for AMD, no?
