Well, I hope that the logic followed by the people's daily isn't permitted to stand.

They claim that, since Chinese (which clan?) may have had some initial presence in Taiwan, but when the Portugese passed by and named it Formosa, they found it inhabited by bandits and not under Chinese government control. The dutch were the first to actually colonize the island (outside of the local Malayo-Polonesians who had been there for thousands of years).

There is NO record that shows the Chinese actually ruled Taiwan until the Ching dynasty (kicking out the Dutch).

If we permit this kind of logic to stand, we'll have Spain claiming the Mexico and the southern US belongs to them. Or more ridiculous, Peru laying claim over the Andes on the basis that the Incans once ruled them.
