I thought I had made my own position quite clear. I worry about the not so stupid but definitely deadly, tragic illusion that force without promise of a political opening only leads to more suicide bombers, to less security, to more force. In short, the Algerian outcome.

Believe it or not, Sharon is also aware of the need for a political opening. Trouble is, neither Arafat nor Hamas are credible peace partners. Aside from waiting to see what the situation is after the US goes into Iraq, Israel is now giving Barghouti a soapbox to declare himself the next generation leader. It is widely suspected that Israel is arranging for Barghouti to succeed by giving him a showy trial.

And would you please stop saying 'the Algerian outcome'. That's just silly, unilluminating, and very tiresome. There is no comparison, apart from the Islamism on one side of the fight. In Israel, few die (approx 4000 in the last ten years) and the whole world meddles. In Algeria, it's a bloodbath (over 120,000 in the last ten years) and no one gives a damn.
