As I said before, I am really hoping that Bush brings his case to the American people and Congress. There are legitimate reasons for an invasion of Iraq (and legitimate reasons against). We shouldnt be afraid of having an actual debate on the merits of the case.

Absolutely correct.

It appears that W welcomes the debate.

However, it seems that only a very strong negative public reaction will stop the plans to go in.

From a legal standpoint, I think he'll use the Congressional authorization granted to him after 9/11 as formal justification for his actions.

One other thought....I think I have a pretty good idea about the negative consequences of an invasion. How about the positive. What effect would a partly democratic Iraq (maybe patterned after Turkey?) have on the balance of power in the ME? Would it hasten the spread of democracy to other countries in the ME? Not sure about the answer to that either....

You make some interesting points prior to these questions, slacker, but it's reasonably clear we need simply to agree to disagree on them.

On this point of the positive however, the questions are good ones. What we haven't heard from the Bush people is how they might propose to get from here to there. If they were to do that, not assert they planned to do it, or please trust them because they will do it, but if they were to offer reasonably detailed ideas about how they might get there, ones that dealt with the obvious problems about how to get there, then that would be a great help.

However, I'm not sanguine. This bunch is much too secretive to do that. But, to double back on myself yet again, I would love to be surprised.
