OK....don't worry about the security, in the vast majority of places it is no big deal (except for an LAX nightmare, I have been waiting on average less than five minutes to pass through security the last ten times I have flown. I have not flown out of National though, and I can imagine they are more rigorous there.) As for the screwdriver, just check it in with your checked bag....you should have no need to adjust the modem while en route anyways. I have actually found flying to be a relatively pleasant experience this year.
