"Big Content is taking their war on the consumer to the next level. The record labels wanted to sue the mp3 site Listen4ever.com, but because the site is hosted in China they couldn't zero in its ISP or its owner. So since they couldn't get the site itself taken down, they decided to sue a whole slew of ISPs in order to force those ISPs to block their users from accessing the site.

Defendants in the suit are AT&T Broadband Corp., a unit of AT&T ; Cable & Wireless USA, a unit of Cable & Wireless, Sprint Corp ., Advanced Network Services and UUNET Technologies, a unit of WorldCom .

Notice that the labels seem to be going after backbones, and not really end-user ISPs. This makes the suit even more outrageous. They want carte blanche to censor the Internet at the backbone level. This is just insane! I've been covering this stuff for over four years now, and it just keeps getting worse. If they win this suit and they're allowed to issue "takedown" notices to backbone service providers, then this'll set a precedent that can be used by almost anyone with enough clout for any reason. The censors will have finally beat the Web. "
