I'm still trying to recover from CB's pronouncement that "We [americans] don't like fighting, but we do it very well. Afterwards, we bring first charity -- food and medicine, and then a better way of life -- democracy and capitalism, all the good things." Ah, yeah. The better way of life argument. Maybe CB forgot about the Bikinians? They gave us the bikini (for which I personally will be eternally grateful) and we gave them starvation and radiation poisoning. Talk about a balance of trade deficit... Read the whole story. It'll break your heart. Or maybe not. bikiniatoll.com But I'm sure you and CB could match me anecdote for anecdote about the good and bad of British, French, American colonisation. I just think you ought to contemplate the perspective that there are no moral superiors and/or better ways of life. Just different morals and different ways of life. Isn't it about time to move beyond the somewhat transparent rationalization that people colonize for the benefit of the original inhabitants of the colony. And if you take your atheism as seriously as i take mine (g), you'll drop that Puritan ‘one right way to life' attitude and go with the Quaker belief that different people can find virtue by unlike paths. (Which is so unself-righteous it hardly seems religious. I mean what good is heaven if all your enemies are there?) John
