Its amazing to me that despite millions of deaths following the fall of Vietnam, people still think it was a useless war.....

Those deaths were a product of that war.

War is fought to attain a political objective. A war is not won when the enemy force is defeated, it is won when the political objective is attained. A war fought to achieve a political objective that is unclear or unattainable is useless and stupid.

We had a window of opportunity in Vietnam in 1945. The people who saw the window were silenced by ideologues and those who gave a higher priority to placating a doomed colonial power. The window closed, and from then on our efforts were useless indeed.
