I wouldn't disagree with the proposition that our values are products of our culture, not some sort of revealed truth. Would you?

You can get in trouble defining those terms, Steve. :^) The "Revealed Truth" is fairly easy to handle. There is a bumper sticker that says, "God said it, I believe it, and that's it!" I tend to stay away from those types.

The second one depends of the definition of "Value." the 2+2="whatever the group says," types are not going to get the time of day from me. The "In our Culture" types that use that to justify slavery, etc, are not on my horizon either.

A lot of what we talk about in our culture as "values" is really customs or traditions. I was standing in Borders reading a magazine the other day as two teenage boys went by having a conversation. The foul language being used loudly and casually made me think I was back in an Army Barracks. I think that "Sex in the City" is "Soft Porn," and some MTV Videos can turn my stomach. We have become a much more vulgar society, IMO. Some would say this is "Values." I think it is more in the line of "customs."
