I will probably get down about 6AM for a few hours, if it goes as it has in the past. This post is on a subject that troubles me, and I think we need to explore it openly, in order to cut down on some of the battles we get into. That is namecalling. When I use the pronoun "You" in this post FL, I mean all the posters. (If I was from John's home state, I would use, "Youall.") :^) I consider my self a "Libertarian." That means I end up as a "lefty" on most social questions, and a "righty" on most economic and Foreign Policy questions. Others of my persuasion believe in no Foreign Involvement, period. They are true "Isolationists." The Media sometimes call a Republican a "Rightwinger." But they hardly ever call a Democrat a "Leftwinger." This means, that when those of us who take what would be called a conservative approach to Foreign Policy, are called "rightwingers" on the thread, we accept it. We are used to it. But if we refer to those of you who want the other approach to Foreign Policy "leftwingers," you get "bent out of shape," and think we are "namecalling." It seems fine to many of you to refer to others as "neocons," "Warmongers," but if we use terms like "Socialists", or "lefties" we catch hell. (I would prefer to use "Collectivists", but that word doesn't resonate here.) The problem with the word "Liberal" is that in the rest of the world it means someone whose first principle is individual rights, especially economic ones. In this country is means someone whose first principle is social rights, and thinks that economic freedoms should be limited. The "Liberals" here would be called "Socialists," "leftwing", or "The Left" in Europe. So I am sometimes at my wits end to figure out how to describe positions here without using "Liberal," "Lefty" or "leftwing." I stay away from using "Socialist," even when it fits, because it causes such bad feelings. However, I do know that we can't post here without using some of these terms. So to those of you respond to a post of mine with some comment about how my position is that of a "rightwinger" or "neocon," that's fine. But I would appreciate it if you would not use "warmonger." (I also promise not to use "Communist," and it would be nice if you guys did not use "Nazi." ) :^)
