$250,000 is rich? Hardly. In the NE that is just comfortable....

Can I quote you on that? For those many us living in the NE who don't get even close to that amount in annual income, I promise, a quarter of a million dollars a year looks rich, not quite filthy, but you get the point.

Some wise soul remarked somewhere that one of the measures of a civilized society was the pay scale for teachers relative to lawyers. (I assume you are not one, but the small business type you said you were.) Teachers, the bottom line of this wise soul's point, socialize the young and any seriously civilized society would wish to have only the very best of its citizens do that task.

By that measure, we (the US) don't even get in the category, let alone rank well up in it.

I know, there I go, whining again. But it's your fault. Your comment reminded me of that wise soul's comment. ;-)

Check out this calculator...it shows that if you're making 100k in San Mateo, CA you only need 50k in Hartford CT to enjoy the same standard of living...or in VT you only need 40k. Your standard of living then is twice as good as it would be if you moved to a really nice state. LOLOL
