On the one hand, the policy has been "hijacked by ideologues", on the other, the image is "confused, unfocused and awkward"? Generally, when a policy has been hijacked by ideologues, it is going in a very definite direction, no confusion at all.

That may be true. But when the presentation of the ideology is inconsistent and lackluster, the underlying legitimacy of the operation is questioned. If we were to poll the public on why it is imperative to invade Iraq, what would the answer be?

On the other hand, maybe they knew perfectly well what their response would be, and knew an end run would be necessary.

And would this position have anything to do with the theory there is very little credible evidence to suggest Iraq is an imminent threat or tied directly with al-Qaida?

Since the discussion has now shifted from 'whether' to 'when', seems they had a point.

I think you're jumping the gun here, Nadine. But pinning the administration into a pro-invasion stance isn't really surprising from the hawkish crowd. I mean if the Israelis attempted it, why shouldn't the American hardliners follow suit?

The mission has been defined, the coalition will follow after.

Oh really? And what exactly is our mission in a post-Saddam Iraq and how do we attempt to reach that goal?

As for the leaks, I incline to the school that says the first was a real 'oh my gosh, lock up the son of a bitch who leaked this'; the rest are disinformation designed to cover the first.

Perhaps, but we'll never know for certain.
