Way OT: Entrepeneurial activity is the category I had in mind. Used in that way, the term can be applied to a lot of settings. It not only fits faculty activity rather well; it's a term frequently used to describe such activity. Just need to have the special word to get into the club. One of the ironies of this discussion is that, generally speaking, business entrepeneurs make very bad university trustees, whereas executives in large corporations make much better ones. The latter tend to know what to keep their hands out of. Entrepeneurs tend to think they should hire the janitors.
