John, this is lame. Krugman's words were 'a $12 million gift' to 'a sitting governor.' In quotes. Therefore, it is perfectly fair for Bush's partners to point out that he was a private citizen at the time. They make no claim about Bush having no political connections. Flat out malarkey. Bush was governor from 1994 and received this money in 98 or 99.

Nadine, let's let it rest.

But I can't resist. The $12 million as I understand it, is a 1998 phenomenon. He was governor then. There were earlier references to stuff in 89 when he was not governor but clearly a political target of opportunity as the President's son.

How and why he got the $12 million is what's in debate, as I read it. We'll just have to see if this has any legs. I doubt it because the newspaper source doesn't sound credible. But I've been known to be wrong. ;-)

As for whether Bush did good work as an executive with the Texas Rangers, that could be debated. My sources tell me he was used to get land deals in Arlington. His political connections working.

As for whether $12 million was too much, I have no idea.
