We used to worry about a military coup against civilian authority. Now we worry about a civilian coup against military authority.

That's classic Dowd. She's in the zone.

Scott, I think Dowd's and Buchanan's column you posted in #reply-17903955 both harken back to the Muraweic leak. I think the backstory there was blowing the cover off of Prince of Darkness Perle's little secret shadow cabinet in Rummy's realm. It makes the Friends of Cheney operation on energy policy look positively picayune by comparison. Wonder if Ollie North is ever invited to sit in? Of course, if those guys really wanted to do it right, they'd get Henry Kissinger in there, who did a much more effective job than Ollie and Co. in running random wars and stuff outside of official channels.

I find the Perle meta-line on what a disaster it would be if W backslid on the line Perle's been feeding him to be a bit too obviously self serving. Though that particular meta-line should be familiar to long time readers here. W has, to his credit, been artfully ambiguous about endorsing the Perle line fully. He's back off on it enough times that I think his distance out on that limb is (regularly and repeatedly) overstated.

Colin Powell is still Secretary of State, no matter how much Perle lusts after that position. With any luck the Prince of Darkness will be stuck in the shadows a while longer.
