Signs of life in telecom capital spending...

+ 3G Launches in Italy, Sweden, Australia, Hong Kong, and elsewhere...
+ 3G Launches this year in London and Italy...
+ 1500 base stations to be launched in London alone...

Those base stations will need backhaul services which
could be supplied by STXN radios. Whether STXN gets
orders from Hutchison or not, announcments like this
bode well for future telecom spending.

Hutchison 3G Plans Aggressive Launch Of 3G Service
Sunday September 8, 9:16 pm ET

TOKYO -(Dow Jones)- Hutchison 3G UK Holdings Ltd. ,
the mobile operator likely to be the first to offer third-
generation services outside Asia, plans an aggressive
pitch to consumers that will threaten its rivals' margins,
the Financial Times reported in its Monday overseas
edition.

The operator, which is controlled by Hong Kong's
Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. and in which NTT DoCoMo
Inc. (DCM or 9437) has a 20% equity stake, is
considering simple, low-priced, flat-rate voice call
charges for its U.K. launch this year, the FT reported.

Hutchison's assault on the U.K. will be closely watched
by rivals. The launch will be a test-bed for Hutchison's
global 3G ambitions.

People familiar with the group's plans say it is looking
at significantly undercutting existing prices on voice
calls made within its areas of 3G coverage, a strategy
that could be mirrored across its international
operations, the FT reported.

Call charges are expected to be among the simplest in
the mobile industry. Unlike most other operators, which
impose different tariffs depending on when calls are
made, Hutchison is understood to be planning to woo
consumers with a single rate, regardless of the time of
day, the FT said.

Hutchison, which is planning similar launches in
several countries, including Italy, Australia, Sweden
and Hong Kong, has been rolling out an extensive 3G
network to offer high-speed wireless Internet access
and mobile video- conferencing, according to the FT.

Hutchison is hoping to attract users with data services
backed by strong 3G coverage in urban areas. In
greater London alone, Hutchison will launch with about
1,500 base stations, enabling it to offer almost total 3G
coverage within the M25 orbital highway. Similar
extensive coverage is expected in other cities in the
U.K. and Italy, where a launch is also planned this year,
the FT reported.

But, the mobile operator has yet to finalize how heavily it
will subsidize the cost of handsets to bring the price
down to affordable levels, according to the FT.
Hutchison has signed deals with NEC Corp. (J.NEC or
6701) and Motorola Inc. (NYSE:MOT - News) for delivery
of two million handsets at a cost of about $750 each.

Hutchison dismissed reports on its pricing as "pure
speculation," insisting it had yet to reach a decision, the
FT reported.

STXN introduces radios for the 2.4 and 5.8 GHz unlicensed bands.

This is cool.. but the new "Unity" radio platform that STXN is coming
out with next year will be even cooler. As its name suggests, "Unity"
will unify their entire portfolio of products for the licensed bands.
I expect Unity to reduce their manufacturing costs while providing
greater compatibility/interoperability among their products. In the
interim, these new products for the unlicensed bands will help grow
their customer base (and revenue) while providing an "upgrade"
path for customers who later want to move to using licensed bands.

Stratex Networks Broadens Product Portfolio with Addition of
License-Exempt Radios

Stratex Networks Now Offers the Most Complete Portfolio of
Licensed And License-Exempt Microwave Radios

SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Stratex
Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: STXN), one of the world's foremost
wireless transmission solutions providers for mobile and
broadband wireless access networks, today announced the
immediate availability of a radio frequency license-exempt digital
radio platform. Complementing Stratex Networks' current product
portfolio, the Velox LE(TM) will provide flexibility of using both
licensed and unlicensed products in planning and implementing
customers' networks.

"As part of our ongoing commitment to reduce customers' costs, we
are now adding a license-exempt solution to our broad wireless
transmission product line," said Charles D. Kissner, chairman and
chief executive officer of Stratex Networks. "The addition of the
Velox LE product line allows us to reduce recurring costs in some
countries where our customers face high licensing fees. In many
cases, this also allows for quicker startup of networks where
licensing procedures are slower and therefore time to revenue is
longer."

The Velox LE is available in 2.4 and 5.8 GHz license-exempt
bands and provides up to 4xE1 or 4xT1 capacity as well as a 10
Base-T bridged Ethernet port supporting up to 8 Mbps continuous
throughput. Velox LE offers the ability to upgrade capacity through
software, drastically reducing the number of hardware options
required. This full-featured system also contains a frequency
spectrum analyzer providing the ability to identify the existence of
frequency interference. During installation, if co-channel
interference is detected, the installer can simply program the radio
to a clearer frequency without upgrading hardware or changing
diplexers. With rapidly increasing use of these license-exempt
bands this provides for better quality of service.

"The Velox LE radio can be easily and rapidly installed and
configured to form point-to-point links, wireless Ethernet bridges or
even video links," said Rob Vance, product manager for Stratex
Networks. "It is a cost-effective alternative to leased lines and
provides fast connectivity, while also ensuring the highest quality
possible using license-exempt spectrum."
