"But the record of American experts when it came to the war was no better. At the time I compiled a file, long since lost,"

factual disconnect between these two statements

"As Mr. Frost observes, the experts' "attachment to particular doctrines, which they hope will be validated by events, can mar their judgment." This was the case in 1991. It is the case today."

Perception is reality.
Who knows who is correct?
Let's just skip the war, save the lives of our soldiers and innocents and go right to the negotiations.
What's not on the table from our side?

Hi LindyBill; Re "Only a few months ago, remember, the doomsters were predicting that, like the British and Soviets before them, American soldiers would face a quagmire in Afghanistan. Their warnings peaked just in time for the Taliban to collapse."

(1) Arguing that an attack on Iraq would be unwise is not identical to being a "doomster". I'm not arguing that the US can't knock over Baghdad, in fact I've stated the opposite. My problem with a full scale attack on Iraq is the second act, keeping the locals in line.

(2) For that matter, I wasn't one of those who argued that the attack on Afghanistan was unwise, or that it would result in a quagmire. In fact, I argued just the opposite, that it would be a cake walk, relatively speaking.

(3) Most of the Republican or military opponents of an attack on Iraq are in the same boat as I am, as far as (1) and (2).

So I think that Owens is setting up a bit of a straw person with this argument.
