With extraordinary success, the companies have verified interoperability between Concurrent's MediaHawk VOD System and Internet Photonics' LightStack(TM) MXs feeding into a Harmonic Inc. Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) QAM Modulator for a true 10 Gigabit DWDM transport solution. The solution, which was set up in only 30 minutes, offers the benefits of 10 Gigabit Optical transport with the dramatic cost savings gained from using Gigabit Ethernet server connections. Cable multiple system operators (MSOs) can now reduce capital investment while supporting faster VOD launches that offer more content and higher reliability than current alternatives. Because of its increased network transport density, 10 Gigabit DWDM technology represents a cost savings to the operator for a wide range of "everything on demand" services at minimal costs. "With this 10 Gigabit DWDM offering, cable operators can now meet the increasing demands for interactive services, such as subscription VOD and personal video recording - or Concurrent's Personal Video Channel(TM), also called pVC(TM). These on-demand services are gaining rapid acceptance among cable system customer bases and represent a true revenue-generating opportunity for the MSOs," said Steve Necessary, president of Concurrent's XSTREME (VOD) Division. "With server streaming capacity rates approaching single Gigabit Ethernet capacity toward the end of the year, server technology could outpace the ability of the network to deliver content to consumers without Gigabit Ethernet technologies," he added. The integrated Concurrent/Internet Photonics solution drives the cost for an end-to-end GbE connection to a fraction of competing alternatives by enabling cable MSOs to cost-effectively deploy centralized VOD servers for greater profitability and faster return on investment.
