QCOM--RESEARCH ALERT-Morgan Stanley raises estimate on Qualcomm

NEW YORK, Aug 22 (Reuters) - Morgan Stanley Dean Witter on Thursday said it slightly raised its fiscal 2002 earnings estimate on wireless technology firm Qualcomm Inc. (NasdaqNM:QCOM - News) to 94 cents a share from 93 cents a share due to a more optimistic outlook for cell phone replacement demand.
The brokerage firm also repeated its fiscal 2003 estimate for Qualcomm of $1.20 a share.

"After meeting with Korean carriers and handset suppliers, we believe that current conditions are solid, new opportunities abound and Korean CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) carriers are in a strong financial position," analyst Louis Gerhardy said in a research note.

Qualcomm owns most of the relevant patents to CDMA, the second-most widely-used wireless technology in the world.

Shares of Qualcomm rose $1.07 or 3.7 percent to $30.30 on Nasdaq in morning trade.
