I agree. I thought his impressions of Israel in the '60s was interesting. I was taking a class in LA at the time of the '67 war. A couple of members were Jewish and I went through the "agony to triumph" experience with them.

Interesting, but not a review,. . .

I agree but because of the length I thought either TNR has decided to copy the NYRB style or it's really an essay they solicited from Judt or he offered them which simply uses Oren as an excuse to get started.

As for his disagreements with Oren, I was struck by one that I saw, even though I read only the first portions. Oren attributes Egypt's military strategizing to the chief of staff, name escapes me, not to Nasser. The conflict between the two then structures a lot of Egyptian mistakes. Judt attributes it all to Nasser.

I concluded he skipped that portion of the book, went right to the portions which interested him.

Book reviewing ain't what it used to be given Paul Kennedy's careless review of Bernard Lewis' little book in the New York Times and this one by Judt.

Hmmm. Nadine is on vacation at the same time that Debka is on vacation. Coincidence? (Cue spooky music from X-Files.)

While Nadine is gone, I can't let all the goodies from her favorite blogs go unremarked - this from den Beste is a gem: >>One of the major arguments being made in Europe to our plans to attack Iraq is that it could destabilize
the entire region and that it's impossible to predict what might happen. The American reaction to that has
been, more or less, "And your point is?"<<
