Meanwhile, fire is destroying more American forests than logging can ever hope to destroy. And you know what some environmentalists say to this? "Fine, that's Mother Nature's way of clearing out old growth. Don't mess with it." No joke; I heard a guy featured on a radio talk show who said exactly this. Fortunately, some environmental groups aren't this illogical, but that's not going to stop the stubborn wackos who fear losing credibility over their pet issues.

Tenchusatsu, the issue of lightning/fire taking out trees as the natural way the ecosystem renews itself is hardly a wacko idea. Its a concept endorsed by most foresters as well as environmentalists. In those circles, it is well known that certain evergreen trees have seeds that are impermeable to fire. They are the first seeds to take hold after a fire and to regenerate. As their seedlings begin to grown, animals and insects are drawn to the area bringing with them through their excrement and other means seeds of more species of trees.

Many of these newer tree species require the shelter of the more established trees before they can grow. Therefore, in canopy of the more mature trees, the newer seedlings gain a foothold and begin to grow. The way nature works and renews itself is incredibly complex and fascinating. This is just a small example of that process. You should learn more about it. By doing so, the arrogance of your ignorance won't be a cause of embarrassment in the future.
