I don't think having fought in a war or served in the military makes anyone reasoning person's opinion about a military action any less valid.

I would seriously have to disagree with that point of view. I have never been in the military, but if guys were going to be sent in to a war, I would want an experienced person advising on that very subject. It's not a normal everyday experience.

Also you have to look at the worst case scenarios carefully. (imho) Like if I was a Chinese general tasked with invading Taiwan with success. (I've been posting a few stories on that subject) When would be the best time for me to launch an attack? If your down, one can only expect all your adversaries to try and take advantage of the situation.
