That was the one of the big issues with the Florida election in 2000. The Panhandle is a relatively conservative area, and its polls were still open for another hour when the network yahoos awarded Florida to Gore. Nobody in New York seemed to know that there is a part of Florida that is next to Mobile, Alabama, a long ways from Miami and Ft. Lauderdale, and that portion of the state is in the Central Time Zone. Conservatives argued at the time that the networks' action came close to costing Bush the state, and therefore the election, by causing some voters to stay home.
