The ash running off into the lakes helps to prevent acid rain. Look it up. In fact to combat acid rain Canadians were throwing giant alka seltzer like tablets into their lakes. The ash runoff has a neutralizing effect. My uncle, an agronomist, regaled me with all this and I'm sorry I can't remember all the specifics, and I read about the Canada solution years ago.
