The contract involves engineering, project management and installation of Emerson's PlantWeb® digital plant architecture in the new facility. IDEC Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq:IDPH - News) is a biopharmaceutical company engaged primarily in the research, development and commercialization of targeted therapies for the treatment of cancer and autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. The New IDEC Manufacturing Operation (NIMO) will house 15,000-liter bioreactors and down-stream processing equipment. These facilities will provide for the simultaneous manufacture of multiple products, and will give IDEC large-scale mammalian cell-culture manufacturing capacity. Johannes Roebers, Senior Director of Engineering and IDEC's project leader, cited project execution expertise and advanced automation technology as reasons for selecting Emerson Process Management. "Emerson's personnel understand our applications and are easy to work with. Their proven engineering and project management expertise are qualities they bring as main automation contractor for the project." Marcus Webb, IDEC's Associate Director of Instrumentation and Controls, said "We went out and compared Emerson with other vendors and selected Emerson as the clear leader in providing the technology and services for the scope of this project. And, their open, innovative PlantWeb technology is powerful, yet simple to implement." "IDEC Pharmaceuticals is a highly valued partner. We appreciate their commitment to our relationship, and their manufacturing vision," commented John Berra, executive vice president of Emerson with responsibility for the process management business. "We share the same drive for innovation and technology that delivers results, and the same excitement about the end game -- helping IDEC deliver timely, high quality, life saving therapies." Jim Nyquist, president, Emerson's Performance Solutions division, commented: "We're proud to be part of such an important undertaking and that IDEC has entrusted us to be their main automation contractor for their first large scale manufacturing facility. Emerson is eager to work with IDEC to ensure that this project is a success." Emerson completed the front-end engineering and design this past December and the company is currently providing comprehensive engineering and project management services on the project. Emerson's automation services and PlantWeb digital plant architecture will provide a platform for IDEC to build and commission its manufacturing facilities in the quickest time possible. Once the plant is completed, the PlantWeb architecture collects and distributes vital process information. Emerson experts will help IDEC apply this information to ensure that operations always perform to the highest potential, and that regulatory reporting and validation processes are streamlined. PlantWeb components that are part of the IDEC contract include the DeltaV(tm) digital automation system, which features a user-friendly human interface and advanced batch and reporting functionality proven in the pharmaceutical industry. Also included is PlantWeb's AMS predictive maintenance software which provides instrument engineering and startup ease, as well as maintenance capabilities.
