I disagree. The difference between benchmark that uses DirectX 7 and 8 must be that the DirectX 8 benchmark uses features (Function calls, objects, etc) not available in DirectX 7. The same way, DirectX 7 (Or 6, 5, 4, 3) program can never call functions that only appeared in version 8.

Your point that DX8 or 9 driver may accelerates all previous games is valid, but irrelevant, since the system being tested already has DirectX 8 (or whatever is the latest) installed when testing DirectX 7 based 3dmark 2001.
