I don't know how southern foresters think......do you have foresters, or are they forest farmers? In the national parks here in the West, the policy is to let lightning strike fires burn themselves out. Only when such fires threaten human habitation is something done about it. The forestry pros here recognize that the trees are their livings. They are absolute experts at wringing the maximum number of board feet out of every stand. And they routinely go in and set fires and do selective cutting to maximize the value of the stand.
