As part of the Economics of Wireless Data Road Show in June '01, Q presented (at slide #26) a graphic entitled "Cell Count for Dense Data Traffic". It shows the number of cells required for a one square kilometer area under "dense traffic". There are 3 cells for 1X and 3 cells for WCDMA. There is only ONE for 1XEV. Perhaps this is the source of the 3 to 1 ratio.

BTW it shows 42 GPRS cells for the same area, and I assume the same data traffic, although that is not explicitly stated.

I have a hard copy of the slide but have been unable to locate it on Q's website, so I don't have a link.
