Irwin has discussed methods of synchronization that did not require GPS satellites. I'm sure that this was meant to reassure the nervous europeans.

Synchronization with GPS is easy and straightforward. However the general idea of shyncrhonization is simply that all these ground based, interconnected base stations have the same time clock to within a few microseconds. As another reply suggests, Dr. Jacobs has mentioned other ways than GPS to accomplish this.

The point IMHO is that WCDMA is being thick about this. The advantages of unsynchronized base stations exist, but are so minimal compared to the pain.
