That Civil War great great grandfather got here in 1853 with his family. They left Ireland because of the Famine. They spent a couple of years in New York, then headed west for Illinois. The oldest son married and had a son (my great grandfather) and joined the Union Army in 1863. He was wounded and captured in his first battle. He said the Confederates who captured him treated him well and treated his injury, but then he was sent to the POW camp at Andersonville, GA. That was sheer hell and destroyed him. He died a year after being released by Union troops who took the camp.
