My older son is embarking on an adventure. He just took the placement exam for free classes which start in a couple of weeks, learning Arabic, at the Institute for Islamic and Arabic Sciences in America. Since he knows zero Arabic, he'll start in the beginner class. Interestingly, he says maybe half of the people taking the placement test looked Middle Eastern. From their website: "The Institute of Islamic and Arabic Sciences in America (IIASA) is a non-profit educational institution affiliated with al-Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University (IMSIU) in Riyadh-Saudi Arabia. The Institute is one of six overseas institutions affiliated with IMSIU. IIASA was established in 1409 A.H./1988 C.E. in Fairfax, Virginia." Also from their website: >>A Statement about the Horrible Attacks that Occurred in New York and Washington D.C on Tuesday, September 11th, 2001 Muslims throughout the World were deeply shocked and horrified by the terrible inhumane attacks which took place last Tuesday, September 11, 2001 at The World Trade Center in Manhattan, New York and The Pentagon Building in Washington D.C. To every Muslim, these regrettable attacks were vicious and cowardly. Regardless of whoever committed such acts, they constitute clear violations to the teachings of Islam (stipulated in the Glorious Quran and the authentic traditions of Prophet Muhammad, Peace be upon him and all the messengers of God the Almighty). Killing people is certainly evil. The Glorious Qur'an strongly condemns it: " if anyone killed a person not in retaliation of murder, or (and) to spread mischief in the land - it would be as if he killed all mankind, and if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of all mankind." (5:32). The Glorious Quran states " Allah does not forbid you to deal justly and kindly with those who fought not against you because of your religion and did not drive you out of your homes. Verily Allah loves those who deal with equity ". (60: 8). This verse, and many others, teaches Muslims to treat people justly and to avoid causing them any harm. The Glorious Quran commands all Muslims to forbid and stop such evil acts. " Those who, if We give them power in the land, establish prescribed prayers, pay the poor-due, and enjoin right conduct and forbid evil " (22:4). Strongly believing in these Quranic teachings, the vast majority of Muslims in the World are peace-loving people. They surely disassociate themselves from these horrible crimes of terrorism. Islam and true Muslims stand for peace, harmony, and justice. From the standpoint of Islamic law, Shaikh Salih Al-Luhaidan , Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council in Saudi Arabia, asserts that the attacks on The World Trade Center and The Pentagon are considered serious crimes in Islam. The Shaikh maintains, " Those who commit such crimes are the worst people. Anyone who thinks that any Islamic Scholar will condone such acts is totally wrong ". Several years ago, The Commission of Senior Scholars in Saudi Arabia issued a decree stating that hijacking planes is strictly forbidden in Islam. The Commission also indicated that massacre of tourists, bombing of civilians and destroying buildings and other properties are absolutely prohibited regardless of the victim's faith, color or ethnicity. The Glorious Quran affirms: " And let not the enmity of a people make you avoid Justice. Be just. That is nearer to piety ". (5:8). In accordance with these principles, the Institute of Islamic and Arabic Sciences in America (IIASA) condemns the horrendous acts committed in New York and Washington and regrets the valuable loss in human lives. IIASA sends its condolences to the families of the victims and urges all Muslims in America and Worldwide to do the same. As followers of Islam, we have to represent the great values of our religion. Likewise, IIASA calls upon the nation in America to treat Muslims fairly. It is unjustifiable to hold innocent Muslims in America or anywhere else responsible for the acts of terror that they deplore and strongly condemn. In fact, Muslims, in this tragedy and in many others like it throughout the world, have been victimized by terrorism. <<iiasa.org Your culture and my culture are very similar, derived from Northern European culture. The Arabic culture is very different, and I am looking forward to understanding it better.
