The Germans have also made efforts to see that they do not repeat their mistake. This should be counted to their credit. Descendants of blacks that were shipped here owe their current life to the past, i.e. under laws of random selection they would not exist without the past trade. True. Which in in no way excuses slavery. Regardless of that, it was still an outrageous institution. Many Southerners recognized that and that it was incompatible with the spirit of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights while it existed (although also clearly permitted in the original Constitution). However, when a system is designed to eliminate your life and your values and any memory of you it is a much different matter. What is that inreference to?
