The Founding Fathers had the wisdom to understand that the people at large cannot be trusted to make the best decision for the presidency. This is why there is a buffer, the Electoral College, between the voter and the elected.

The POPULAR VOTE could [sort of] be considered a "popularity contest", although even that fails to take into account such items as the media intervention that occurred in the '00 election, as well as the fact that SOME voters are voting on issues OTHER than popularity -- for example, party affiliation. But as we know, the popular vote is TOTALLY immaterial in electing our presidents.
