"Frankly, I don't know what is going to happen about the mountains of debt and derivatives because they have lives of their own and, unless serious attempts are made to regulate both, they will, like Frankenstein, destroy their maker --- and who knows what else?"

Well, while some enraged investors chase the Frankenstein's monster of false company earnings and shady derivatives with torches and pitchforks, blind CNBC analysts provide him shelter and offer him a hot bowl of soup and a mug of ale.

"Of course, regulation means interference..."

Regulations seem to equate to interference. Let's just calling it a law against stealing.

"...unless there is significant inflation, which there doesn't seem to be, the debt cannot be repaid...since it is unlikely that the debt can and will be repaid one can reasonably expect that it will increase and, in the absence of any particular regulation, at an exponential rate."

I agree--inflation or exponential increase of debt. Growing out of it won't likely be possible for awhile.
