And where does Pakistan (or Israel, for that matter, if we elect to invade Iraq) fit into all this talk about a potential loose cannon on the deck?

Iraq and its current threat to Americans have been way overplayed by the hawks who refuse to see the world as it is. Here we have Pakistan, a known nuclear power, with elements of its government that are openly sympathetic to the cause of the Islamic fundamentalists. Then we have Musharraf and his fragile hold on power, who has recently attempted to consolidate his power base by authorizing himself the appointed dictator of his people, and bypassing any hopes for democratic reform in his country.

The US is walking a tight rope in Pakistan. On the one hand, the Bush administration needs the cooperation of Musharraf in the war of terror if there is going to be any head wind against al-Qaida. On the other hand, pushing him too far with this war on terror or democratic reforms might possibly destabilize his government; and the political vacuum will likely fall into the hand of factions that are very Islamic and very fundamentalist, which makes them very dangerous, with nuclear weapons at their fingertips.
