Well, you can get some really interesting large parasites (worms and such) and bacteria eating uncooked sushi meat. I remember one fascinating worm article, a doctor stumper type article, (rather similar to your fish ear person, but a bit more gruesome). The vegetables aren't usually the problem. Thought you can certainly get e coli (and other nasties) tagging along on a vegetable that has passed through unsanitary conditions. I know I've got an article on that somewhere! :-)
