Actually, he's interested in working in intelligence, so he is thinking studying Arabic might make the CIA or NSA look twice at him. All the kids want to work for the CIA after 9/11.

He is also curious about what's going on these days.

Neither Mecca nor Medina are in Turkey, and are not likely to be there in my lifetime (at least). Therein lie some 'minor obstacles'.
