Handset shipments higher-than-expected for Q2, say report Semiconductor Business News (08/26/02 08:21 a.m. EST) BOSTON -- The worldwide cellular-phone industry reported higher-than-expected shipments for the second quarter of 2002, with 417 million handsets to be delivered this year, according to Strategy Analytics Inc. here. In the first quarter of 2002, Strategy Analytics actually lowered its forecast for cell-phone shipments in 2002, from 425 million units, to 417 million. In 2001, worldwide cell-phone shipments hit 393 million units, according to the Boston-based market research firm. In the second quarter of 2002, worldwide handset shipments were 96.7 million units, according to Strategy Analytics. This is up 6% from 91 million units shipped in Q1 of 2002 and an 11% jump from 86 million in the like period a year ago, said Chris Ambrosio, who tracks the market for Strategy Analytics. “The 2Q shipments were slightly higher than we expected them to be,” Ambrosio said. “We had estimated that they would be at approximately 90 million units. Q1 2001 was slightly lower than we expected as well, however, so the two balanced out,” he said. There are other positive signs. “Subscriber growth has not been robust, but replacement rates have stabilized in 2Q,” he said. “This is a positive sign for Q3 2002, and if that trend continues, we could see a positive holiday season,” he said.
