Or being fully invested in tech:-) Hi Stan, Danger is a relative thing in many instances. There are touring companies which run trips in the harbor; if these did not exist, I would most definitely think twice before going. Also, depending upon how one goes about undertaking such a trip, one can mitigate some of the risk by simply going in larger group, when the weather is known to be favorable etc. The following excerpt is my idea of dangerous; the fellow is kayaking alone. If something happened out in the harbor and one needed help, the distances are greater than it appears. Nobody, even the most experience kayaker, should be out there alone. Regards, Brian Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island I had been trying the entire summer to make it to the Statue of Liberty, but tides and other travel conspired against it. Finally I found the time and tides to go on October 21. I had been hoping to find others to come along, but in the end it was just me and my kayak. I'm not a big fan of crossing the Hudson alone, but once over on the New Jersey side, it was a fairly easy trip. I had to dodge ferries at the ferry terminal in Jersey City, but then I tucked into the quiet waters behind Ellis Island. I had intended to go with the current and come back with the current, but I misjudged and the current turned on me at Ellis Island, so it took a bit longer than expected to get to Liberty Island. I circled it once and then went back via the back of Ellis Island again. The weather was perfect and I managed to take a few pictures. On the way back I had to cross the Hudson again, and I only had one incident when a motor boat came roaring past me too close for comfort. It's good that the K-light is so stable. I took off at 11:45 (1:50 after low tide), which may have been a little late to catch the current all the way to Liberty Island, but it was nice to have the current and wind in my direction coming back. The weather was warm, but the water was getting cold. I put on what warm clothing I had that were water resistant, which meant I was toasty warm the entire trip. I expect, I would have been OK if I capsized, which was of course all that actually mattered. Unfortunately this was my last trip of the season. The water temperature will get too cold for my protective clothes and it would be too risky. There is also the question of river access, now that the Downtown Boathouse has closed for the season.swimmer.org
