yes it is remarkable how the gov't statisticians consistently err on the side of optimism.

So why hasn't some think tank or some university done some scientific studies on the accuracy of govt numbers? Maybe they'll lose their grants?

Can you recall the last time the government told the electorate the truth about anything?

I'm having a hard time remembering myself - maybe Reagan and his "stack of dollar bills to the moon" speech (EDIT - February 18, 1981) about the federal deficit?

That's as close as I can come off the top of my head
