Well, this time it's worse. Now we have opposition from the start.

That's not the point; you were trying to draw some parallel between Iraq and Vietnam; the origins were totally different. We weren't directly threatened, and ultimately, that is the reason Americans weren't behind it. Had North Vietnam posed an immediate threat to the United States the American people would have no doubt supported it.

The real issue here is that Bush has not yet made an effort to explain to the American People why Saddam is a threat. I do believe he is beginning to do so, with Cheney's speech today, as well as the Baker op-ed yesterday (which was obviously written with Bush's knowledge and approval). As this happens, the American People will sign on.

The "strong leader" that took us out catalized the opposition with heavy, indiscriminate bombing of civilian centers.

The "indiscriminate" bombing also brought Vietnam back to the negotiating table (shocking the world, which had opposed the bombing), which undoubtedly saved untold thousands of Vietnamese and American lives, and resulted in the Paris Peace Accords, which led to Americas complete withdrawal from the war. We didn't have precision guided munitions at the time. Also, it hardly mattered -- North Vietnam was routinely sending its women & children to fight anyway -- there WERE no North Vietnamese civilians.

Nixon had his problems, but given the mess he inherited he did a pretty damned good job of handling the war effort.

There was no heavy indiscriminate bombing of civilian centers. If there was those civilian centers would have been wiped out. What occurred was exactly the opposite. Slow escalation, lots of restrictions on bombing and letting the enemy take the initiative and control the tempo of the war.
