"BREW enables consumers to upgrade all software features of a phone without buying a new handset, which of course, has not been the case to date. Interesting dilemma, of course, but not something that concern me at this point as a QCOM investor. "

Phone software complexity has increased exponentially with new multimedia features being built into the chipset.
Not only will BREW give developers and providers a standard platform to distribute new applications regardless of handset brand and implement a standard billing cycle, it allows us to upload the latest bug fixes without a visit to the service center (provider: "Yaaay!!!"). Also allows the unbundling of software from the hardware features. Perhaps now, handset hardware won't be impacted by the lack of complex software to support it.

Ultimately, once a handset leaves the store, I am not aware of any provider eager to ever see it, or the customer, until it is time to buy a new subsidized handset two years from now.
