John, this is just like my argument with jcky.

Nadine, I don't see us as arguing on this point, just stating points of disagreement as clearly as possible. Arguments for me hold promise of finding common ground. On this particular issue, I don't see it.

My short hand on the ME remains, no leadership, not Sharon, not Arafat, not Bush. It will spiral downward until either everyone is exhausted or there is some leadership breakthrough. I can't imagine what the latter might be. I think it should come from the US and Israel because, as Judt argues, the power imbalance, but I don't think it means that Arafat has to be a player. I do think that the more the US and Sharon clamors for Arafat's dismissal, the stronger that makes him.

On this one, I think Edward Said has been right a very long time. Arafat was the wrong man for the times.
