How much power do you need? My guess is that for large transaction-based applications, your best bet is a few quad-Xeon servers with lots and lots of memory. But it's hard to come up with the right answer for you without knowing the specifics of your needs. Maybe quad-Xeon servers are overkill for you. I don't know.

Anyway, if your needs are that huge, then yes, 64-bit Itanium 2 servers will indeed blow away Xeon servers. But the cost only makes sense for real heavy loads or high-end stuff. And as I'm fond of saying, it all depends on what your definition of "high-end" is.

My guess is that by even asking on these forums, your needs aren't that huge. In that case, dual Xeon boxes will probably fit your needs very well. And you definitely won't need 64-bit processing.

Harold, my understanding is that you write custom apps? I found that the Athlon runs custom apps faster than the P4 unless you are willing to write optimized SSE2 code. To give you an idea, it seems that the 2Ghz P4 Northwood just about equals the 1.4Ghz Thunderbird which is slightly slower than the Palomino 1600+. This is in an apps that does a lot of FP and random memory accesses.
