""Merrill Lynch says the move could actually reflect strength in the qtr, although the program is likely to have a negative impact on operating profit in the near-term.""

I believe in retailing the goal is operating profits. Anything that has a "negative impact" on operating profits is a negative. That is why the word "negative" is used in the explanation. Who is this guy from Merrill? A retailer with twenty plus years experience? A Wal-Mart employee that heads up their marketing? Maybe some "analyst" who has never worked retail in his life? That would be my guess. I sure would not wish to trust my money on his knowledge.
