The S&P link cites several calculations, including both:

<< The 12 month March, 2002 operating earnings was $38.97, P/E 24.4

The 12 month March, 2002 'as reported' earnings was $24.70, P/E 38.4>>

Your criticism, if it was intended as such, seems unreasonable. There appear to be several PE calculations, the higher one I assume includes the large write-downs taken recently, especially in the tech sector.
